About À La Carte

The idea for À La Carte was born out of a desire to do meaningful community work when my sons, Noah and Ryan, were young. That small seed has grown into something far beyond what I could have imagined and now, with deep pride and gratitude, I bring you the second volume of this cookbook-storybook.

When Volume 1 launched, it was the culmination of years of effort, late nights, recipe tests, interviews and teamwork. But more than that, it was a celebration of food, resilience and the incredible children and families supported by the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The response to the first book was so heartfelt that it became clear this wasn’t just a cookbook: It was a movement.

As I pondered what might come next, conversations with the team circled back to the same question: When are we starting Volume 2? Their belief in the project and in what we had built together never wavered. As I approached each professional from Volume 1, I thought they’d already given their all through countless hours of top-level work, all pro bono, and that they wouldn’t be willing to do it again. To my surprise, they all said yes. Again. Their dedication and heart made this second book possible.

Montreal-based businesses and institutions including Linen Chest, Arts & Kardz & Café de Mercanti, top-selling retail locations for Volume 1, are some of the Distribution locations where the cookbook will be available. The retailers at the distribution points collect no commission on sales, so that one hundred per cent of proceeds go to the hospital’s Healthy Kids Fund.

Our Sponsors have completed our objective of ensuring that 100 per cent of proceeds from book sales will benefit the hospital.

Our Supporters have provided the ongoing push and promotion of À La Carte, furthering our objective of maximizing fundraising for the hospital.

While Volume 1 is filled with simple, easy-to-prepare dishes meant to inspire more time around the table with family, Volume 2 goes a step further. It features community favourites, cherished recipes passed down through generations and fun, interactive dishes such as Cake Pops that double as family activities and delicious treats. But it’s also a storybook featuring heartwarming stories from caring medical professionals at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, from young patients they have treated and helped and from parents of patients.

After selling more than 2,000 copies in its first edition, À La Carte is back with a second volume.

As the first volume did, Volume 2 offers dozens of simple and flavourful recipes. And as I was with the first volume, I am deeply moved by the accounts of healthcare professionals at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and of its young patients and their families. In sharing favourite recipes, they’re offering more than simply a dish but also a moment of celebration, a precious memory, a bit of comfort. They are also providing us with a touching and inspiring gesture of gratitude.

This fundraising initiative, the result of the efforts of committed volunteers, is admirable. It shows a sincere desire to help vulnerable children and their loved ones across Quebec. Every dollar raised through the book’s sales goes to the Children’s. The proceeds from the sale of the first volume, which quickly sold out, meant that more than $135,000 was donated to the hospital’s Healthy Kids Fund.

I’d like to thank Rebecca Fruchter-Klein, who initiated this wonderful project, her incredible team and everyone who contributed to this beautifully crafted second edition. Your creativity, dedication and heart have made this more than just a cookbook: It is a true expression of love and generosity.

Thank you for giving us a reason to spend more time at the table with our loved ones, knowing that each recipe is helping youngsters to heal.
